The most disappointing person of the year Award

As the year limps toward its conclusion, The Disappointment Institute once again opens nominations for the coveted Most Disappointing Person of the Year Award — a modest recognition of extraordinary underachievement.

This annual honour celebrates those who have managed to embody the very essence of our time: unfulfilled potential wrapped in impeccable self-promotion. From leaders who mistook statements for change, to innovators who reinvented the wheel at twice the subscription cost, to ordinary citizens heroically maintaining the status quo — the field, as always, is tragically rich.

We invite the public to cast their vote, guided by the Institute’s timeless criteria:

  • Expectation Inflation – the gap between promise and performance

  • Aesthetic of Effort – the appearance of doing something meaningful

  • Systemic Consistency – the ability to disappoint across multiple domains

Votes can be submitted online until the collective attention span expires, or 31 December, whichever comes first. The winner will be announced ceremoniously in early January, or perhaps quietly forgotten — depending on the mood. Remember: participation is futile, but meaningful in its futility. From all of us at The Disappointment Institute, thank you for your continued lack of enthusiasm.
