“We’re on a mission to help people face a tsunami of setbacks”

Welcome to The Disappointment Institute — a leading center for the study and practical application of modern disillusionment. We operate at the intersection of psychology, philosophy, and collapse management, offering evidence-informed frameworks for people, businesses and institutes struggling to adjust to the end of abundance.

Our research focuses on Post-Carbon Grief, Cognitive Recalibration, and Existential Adaptation in Late-Stage Affluence.

Because coping is the new innovation.

After a century of progress, growth, and convenient denial, we’ve finally reached that awkward point in history where the future has stopped pretending to get better.

The post-carbon era isn’t a transformation — it’s a slow emotional landslide.

At The Disappointment Institute, we offer structure — because even collapse deserves a coherent framework. The Disappointment Adaptation Framework (DAF-6) charts the six scientifically stages of modern decline. Based on years of fieldwork among anxious professionals, hopeful policymakers, and people who “just need closure,” the DAF-6 provides a stable vocabulary for the instability ahead.

An education for the end of expectations. At The Disappointment Institute, we believe the future will be an excellent teacher — albeit a strict one. As the comforts of the carbon century fade, humanity faces its most demanding syllabus yet: learning to live without the illusions that once kept us motivated.

Our Curriculum of Collapse offers a structured programme in post-optimistic studies — a cross-disciplinary exploration of what happens after progress stops returning our calls. Here, students of decline can deepen their understanding of essential modern disappointments: family, God, politics, love, the universe, and — ultimately — reality itself.

Each module combines theoretical despair with practical adaptation, helping participants move from outrage to irony, from denial to dignity. There are no grades, only realizations. Completion is optional; disillusionment is guaranteed. Enroll today.

Deal with it.

An education for the end of expectations.

  • Before you were disappointed by governments or the universe, there was family. That early seminar in unmet expectations taught you that love doesn’t always listen, advice isn’t always wanted, and holidays are annual performance reviews in emotional maturity.

In this course, we’ll revisit those formative years to understand how genetic proximity and lifelong misunderstanding prepared you for adulthood — and for the energy transition.

  • Once upon a time, you believed in higher plans, karmic justice, or at least that things happen for a reason. Then sea levels rose, your neighbour got a Tesla, and the righteous still suffered. This course gently helps you confront the possibility that no one is in charge, and that meaning might be a human side project. You’ll leave spiritually lighter — and maybe ready to worship entropy itself.

  • You marched, you signed petitions, you even voted. And yet — here we are. This module explores the emotional toll of realizing that progress is not a straight line but a bureaucratic roundabout. Learn how to manage your outrage fatigue, set realistic hopes (“a mildly competent committee”), and practice radical patience in a world optimized for disappointment.

  • Astrology promised guidance, the cosmos promised wonder — but space, it turns out, is mostly cold, silent, and indifferent. In this course, we examine how to find meaning when the universe refuses to provide customer service. Expect guided meditations on insignificance, stargazing with low expectations, and tips on emotionally surviving infinity.

  • They said “you complete me.” Then you moved in together and discovered they meant “you’ll do my laundry.” This course unpacks the tragicomic myth of perfect compatibility. Through practical exercises and gentle sarcasm, you’ll learn to love without illusion, argue without hope, and celebrate the small miracle of someone still texting back.

  • After family, faith, politics, and love have all let you down, what remains? Reality itself — glitchy, overpriced, and poorly scripted. In this capstone course, we face the end of the modern fairytale: that growth is infinite, comfort permanent, and control possible. Graduates leave equipped not with optimism, but with lucid resilience — a humble readiness to face the world as it is, not as advertised.
